Many professionals struggle with imposter syndrome because they believe their personal strengths, interests, and experiences are separate from their professional identity. Erica teaches that they are not. The qualities that make someone an effective leader, communicator, entrepreneur, performer, mentor, or community builder are often the same qualities that make them exceptional valuation professionals.

JoAnn grew up in Colorado and has been a residential appraiser in the Denver Metropolitan Area and Front Range Mountains since 2000. After seven years as a staff appraiser, she started her own company in 2007. Along the way, she discovered a way to combine her first career as a secondary math teacher with her second career in appraisal—teaching other appraisers.
An AQB-certified USPAP instructor since 2008 and a Certified Distance Educator, JoAnn spent more than seventeen years teaching appraisal education nationally. As a curriculum coordinator and lead appraisal instructor, she developed courses, ensured compliance with continuing education requirements, and trained instructors. Her courses covered topics including regression, market analysis, adjustments, appraisal review, complex properties, litigation, expert-witness testimony, and non-lender practice. She has also served as an expert witness and consulted on USPAP matters for the Colorado Attorney General’s office. In 2025, the National Association of Appraisers named JoAnn Appraiser of the Year. She chairs its Communications Committee and, in 2026, was appointed by the Governor to the Colorado Board of Real Estate Appraisers. Her skills and experience are more than an asset to our community, they are a foundational contribution backed by extraordinary merit.
Teaching remains one of her greatest passions. She believes lifelong learning is essential to being a competent appraiser and takes tremendous pride in helping others enter and advance within the profession. JoAnn has admitedly never been part of the “Kool Kids Klub.” Being a geek, smart, driven, and outspoken wasn’t always cool growing up—she jokes that she was so square her corners hurt! But experience taught her that the qualities that can make someone different are often the same qualities that make them valuable.
Today, she embraces those differences. Her focus is helping one person, one appraiser at a time—sharing what she has learned, encouraging others to find their voices, and using her experience to elevate the appraisal profession and, particularly, the women within it.
